Truck Driver Dies Delivering Holiday Packages
by Jana Ritter - Published: 12/19/2016Just six days before Christmas, a 26-year-old truck driver tragically lost his life while doing his job as a contract driver delivering packages for the U.S. Postal Service. The accident occurred early Monday morning on Interstate Highway 680 in Danville, California, when the driver struck an abandoned vehicle, flipped the truck on its side and hit a highway sign. The contents of the truck spilled all over the roadway and the driver was left trapped in the wreckage. He later died at the hospital from injuries he sustained in the crash. His name has not yet been released.

According to the CHP, the young man lived in Sacramento and was a freelance contractor for the US Postal Service. He was driving a two-axel box truck and was heading southbound Interstate 680 near El Pintado Road in Danville, delivering holiday packages on their final stretch to San Jose. Early reports were unclear about what initially caused the driver to crash. "A lot of what we have is based on witness statements," CHP Sgt. Oscar Pacheco said. But hours later, the investigation revealed that the driver apparently struck an abandoned Ford minivan on the right shoulder of the highway, which caused his truck to overturn and hit a large metal pole. CHP officers said that the van and a light-colored station wagon or SUV were involved in an earlier collision, which caused the van to turn over on the shoulder of the road. The CHP have also confirmed that it doesnโt appear the truck driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the crash.
Emergency crews arrived at the scene to find the driver trapped inside the truck. They were able to extract him from the wreckage and he was rushed to a nearby hospital with major injuries but unfortunately he did not survive. The young man was officially pronounced dead at the hospital just before 7 a.m.
The truck was carrying hundreds of Fed Ex packages headed for San Jose on the busiest delivery day of the year. Instead, the accident left them spilled across the highway; closing three lanes of traffic and causing a major back up during the early Monday morning commute. A large amount of wood, clothing and debris were also found nearby in the right lane south of the West El Pintado off-ramp. Crews worked through the morning to clean up the road and all lanes have since reopened except for one. A spokesperson from USPS says that because the truck crashed during the transfer, salvageable packages will be delivered as is and should be able to make it before Christmas. The damaged and destroyed packages will be sent back to FedEx for the company to notify and deal with customers directly.
Really who cares about the packages. This article was definitely tacky. A man dies days before Christmas but hey the packages are going to make it. Smh gotta love this industry
The article starts by acknowledging the tragic loss of a young driver losing his life on the job, just days before Christmas. The info about the packages was left to the very last. Order of importance.
Stop looking for a reason to be offended Brittany, the article covered the tragedy of the young mans passing in a respectable maner. The info about the packages included to close out the article. Otherwise, people like you would have been bitching about not knowing about the cargo..
Suicide to drive on the shoulder and illegal
Who was driving on the shoulder? The mini van was there from an earlier accident. He may have veered off the road for a moment.
all i can say to your post Chris is WOW you open your mouth when you have no clue what happened except he hit a suv that had been involved in a wreck earlier
That is all true but we're not sure if this driver was actually driving on the shoulder or just struck the abandoned vehicle because it was sticking out from the shoulder. Sad either way.
Shut up Chris.......
Christopher Wayne Manuel your probly one of these people who can't stay in your lane a hazzard to everyone else on the road and don't give me shit I've watched these new bees for twenty years an it keeps getting worse
Trucking Unlimited yes it's sad I'm not Hartless but police don't leave vehicles sticking out into the roadway they would have stayed until it was towed
God Bless this driver and his family, this didnt have to happen.
R.I.P. Brother.. Your Log Book is closed. We'll take it from here.
I just actually read the article..We drove by this today..But most of it had been cleared up. Traffic was backed up practically to Walnut Creek.. that makes me so sad.
Also it was not in a place where he would have been driving on the shoulder.. but it was right close to the Diablo off ramp
Light's out and curtains drawn rest well brother.......

RIP young man. My question is why was an overturned minivan just left on the side of the road? Is California so freaking bad off that they can't tow accident vehicles from the scene? Prayers for peace to his family and friends๐๐ผ
Rest easy Driver... The simple minded will never understand our job. Anyone can get in a 4 door Hyundai and think they know it all... Put them going at a step one downhill with a over size on their back, and they'll change the tune real quick....
You know I understand about the packages and all, but why did it even need to be said in this article about a fellow driver that lost his life?
How sad that USPS only commented on the packages and nothing about their young driver. That's really sad. Goes to show no matter how hard you run or work we are just numbers
Prayers to his family and friends. Thank you for your service to the people of our country for bringing us everything we use on a daily basis.

THAT'S SAD DO YOU HAVE ANY NAMES?
After 37 years of sitting behind the wheel in a truck. It saddens me you can see car accidents or hear of them and nobody immediately tries to point responsibility but soon as the truck has an accident right away everybody has an opinion he shouldn't have been doing this or he was going too fast or this or that or whatever. I wish that throughout the 37 years I had a dash cam recording the events that I've encountered so that I can play them back for the highly opinionated and maybe they would have a different opinion about what really happens most of the time. I am very sad for the family which is the most important right now. At your last stop driver R.I.P.
