Truck Drivers Speak Out Against Proposed Speed Limit Rule

by Jana Ritter - Published: 9/16/2016

Last month, the federal government proposed a new road rule that would require electronic speed limiters being installed on all trucks and buses over 26,000 pounds manufactured after the regulation goes into effect. Speeds could be limited to 60, 65 or 68 miles per hour if and when the rule is finalized after a comment period that ends November 7, 2016.  But truck drivers are speaking out and warning that electronically limiting the speed of tractor-trailers will ultimately lead to more highway traffic back-ups and likely increase the number of fatal collisions with cars.

                                                           Proposed rule limits truck speeds

Since the proposal went public, more than 150 people have filed comments to the government, with only 2 in favor. The majority, identifying themselves as independent truck drivers, says that slowing them down only increases the chances of trucks being hit from behind by cars allowed to go 70 mph or more. “The net effect of their rule means that the truck will be running slower still. That’s a crash scenario that’s more severe,” says Todd Spencer, executive vice president of the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association. Spencer also adds that most car-truck crashes on freeways with traffic traveling in the same direction, involve a car rear-ending a truck.

But those in favor of speed limiters disagree, saying it comes down to simple physics. If a semi-truck or bus is traveling slower, the impact of any potential crash will be less severe and fewer people will be injured or killed. They also point to data from The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which analyzed crashes involving heavy trucks and cars from 2004 through 2013. 1,044 people died each year in crashes involving heavy trucks on roads with speed limits of at least 55 mph and the agency calculated that if trucks speeds were limited to 60 mph, 162 to 498 lives per year would be spared because the impact of a crash would be less severe. At 65 mph, up to 214 lives would be saved, and as many as 96 would be saved even with a 68 mph limit. Supporters further argue that speed limiters also would solve the problem of trucks traveling faster than their tires can handle and point to an investigation by The Associated Press, which found that most truck tires can’t handle speeds above 75 mph. Yet some states let trucks go 80 mph or even 85 mph.

truck drivers speak out against speed limit

However, truck drivers say that the government is still creating conditions for more collisions by looking at the severity of crashes and ignoring the overall dynamic of trucks and cars traveling at different speeds. Doug Kruzan is a truck driver from South Carolina and says that in his many years on the job, he’s seen cars hit the back of slower trucks many times when the truck is attempting to move in the left lane to pass. “A car’s coming up behind him at 70, 75. They can’t slow down that quick. He’s going to run into the back of that truck every time,” Kruzan explains.

Truck drivers also make another point saying that if the rule is implemented, tractor-trailers trying to pass each other at similar speeds will cause “blockades” and further delay traffic, which will further frustrate motorists.

They need to look back at the reasons Ohio and Illinois and the other states finally raised the limit for trucks after years of a split limit. In the name of safety. Isn't that what it is all about? I predict if this happens, there will be more rear end collisions with cars butt packing trucks.

Does it matter what we think? The government will do what ever they want anyways. This is beginning to be a communist country. As company drivers and owner/operator drivers, we could make a difference on what we are paid and heck make our own rules. But to many cdl's have been handed out to foreign born driver that we will never unite. Everyone is out for themselves, cutting freight, hauling cheap freight, just plane stealing from other drivers. So it really doesn't matter what we think does it?

When to take 100 trks governed at the same speed , logic tells you because of weight etc , one trk will do 1or 2 mph faster than another , so drivers will be trying to pass holding up miles of cars ... sure regulate all trucks to the same speed and see what happens . Govt = idiots

As someone that drives a speed limited truck (60 mph) it's terrible and unsafe. There are more times than I can count that I am more of a danger going 60 than if I could just go the speed limit. I can't maneuver around other dangerous drivers because I cannot pass them.
Phil Killerlain

On top of making it more dangerous for cars and trucks alike , it also is for drivers that can run the speed limits now ! A PAY CUT ! And I see nothing in the FMCSA mandate from Congress that allows them to control wages ! Yet this is a effect especially for truck drivers who run TX and I 10 and parts of I 20 where 75 mph is the speed limit !

They may want to do something with cell phones first that is the number one reason for fatal crashes. Then not once they have that under control maybe look at limiting how fast a car can travel!! Oh what am I thinking that would affect the law maker's there not going to do that.

Only when they start paying trucks $200 an hour plus a clean air surcharge for new equipment and a fuel surcharge. CDL holders are listed under Maritime law. Split speed limits significantly decrease efficiency as well as significantly increases the danger of accidents.

Sorry Boys and Girls , I'm old school , 43 years out here running the roads and I'm sad to say it but the Quality of drivers out here and the huge number of these steering wheel holders are going to require a reduction in speed . They can't handle truck stop parking lot speeds without crashing.

I disagree with any Federal Law creating any speed limiter for truckers. Cars need to slow down. On a 75 mph highway on I80 I'm doing 75 mph and cars and small trucks run me down like I'm a sick rabbit. Some do anything they can to get in front of me as if it is their right to. Dont get me wrong I know cars belong in front of me but it's the way some people drive that bothers me. Nope my philosophy is cars should be able to travel alittle faster but not much faster. More and more I see the cars congesting is the real problem.
Mike Szlachetka

Here is the answer, tell these ass holes that know absolutely nothing about trucks or truck drivers to pursue laws pertaining to things they know about, like 4 wheelers! The only reason they investigate and create new laws for trucks is to keep their useless, unnecessary high paying government job. It's got nothing to do with safety!!!!
Angela Glassburn

There are pros and Con's to every situation. It is unfair to truck drivers to regulate speed while they have to be more careful with other drivers. I don't think this would be a good idea for truck drivers. Just my opinion due to the fact of people already not respecting big rigs to begin with. Be safe out there.

What a stupid stupid idea , the only way two speed limits will work is two different highways , they should be talking about taking the already slow trucks off the road, you should be required to be able to maintain the posted speed before being allowed on the road, and also trucks that run 65 should be ban from the passing lane
Larry L. Doub
Larry L. Doub
It's a combination of slower traffic and higher speed traffic that is already there, making trucks slower is only going to increase the problem from these idiots who think they have to run their 4 wheelers 85 mph down the road and have no driving sense at all, and then these people come up on a truck trying to pass or any other vehicle and slam on the breaks rather then lift off the gas sooner to slow down, and sometime causing these big wrecks because of it.

so let me get this straight, these guys that sit behind a desk are thinking that by slowing down a semi will prevent more fatalities. Well it apparently is over their head. Spend a week in a semi and you will see how bad this is. For example, running the interstate coming up on a construction site...road signs all say merge now, slow down road work ahead. Let me put some insights, when a few semi's are coming up on a road construction site, their only thought is "I need to get in front of the semi so I don't get stuck behind". 4 wheelers have an issue thinking that being behind a semi is bad, and only holds them up. This is true on open wide road, the speed passed a semi and then cut it off due to the fact that they are about to miss their exit. Right now there is a real danger on the road, slow semi's. You governed out most semi's going from 60 mph to 68 mph and now you have many slow running semi's and you now have a huge issue of accidents. And now its seems the only thing that can be thought is to slow semi's down again. It seems to me that there is another reason...in the last decade there has been a influx of newer drivers that seems are a good fit for this industry. But...in order to help these newer drivers many tools have been introduced, ELD, governors, new designs of trucks, and now this speed limiters. I don't know about you but this looks like a pattern to me. Seems the industry wants these newer drivers and push the older more experienced driver out.

The states raised the truck speed limit, because of the cars rear ending the semi's. If they would spend more time policing the car by give more tickets out for speeding, and not giving the semi there space. If they are going to slow the trucks down, slow the trucks down. can u afford or risk your job to do that?? Alot of drivers out there dont get paid enough to afford to do that, or cant afford to lose their job. Trucking is not the same as it was back in the 60's and 70's where unions could make a difference for truck drivers. Government deregulation took care of that, to prevent any shut down to have an effect on the economy. Too many cut throats out there that will take your freight away if you decide to shut your rig down. So go ahead and shut down your rig, and protest, and see how fast you wind up standing in the unemployment line.
