Smokey Point Distributing Launches New Pay Program, Guaranteed Driver Salaries
by Jake Tully - Published: 5/14/2018Slated for execution next month, Arlington, Washington-based trucking company Smokey Point Distributing has announced the launch of a new salary program for solo and team over-the-road at the company, guaranteeing OTR solo flatbed drivers a minimum salary of $65,000 and team drivers $75,000 each.
With a launch date set at June 1st, 2018, the new salary program from Smokey Point Distributing (SPD) will reportedly combat problems such as inconsistent pay or low pay wages, as well as other financial-related issues that the trucking industry faces when retaining over-the-road drivers.
“Historically the trucking industry has always punished the driver financially for their lack of sales, operational efficiencies or delays due to breakdowns and maintenance requirements,” said Smokey Point Distributing CEO Dan Wirkkala.They all receive their paycheck regardless, but If the driver does not move a mile because of them, the driver’s paycheck is directly affected. That is not right!”
Smokey Point Distributing holds a title as one of the “Best Fleets to Drive For” in both 2017 and 2018, the company reports the attribution of this distinction to its attention to safety as well as the support from the Daseke company to provide the necessary compensation for its drivers.

“The last two years I have had yearly mileage totals that were outstanding,” said Thomas B., an SPD OTR driver. “According to the new salary bonus award, I will not only have a stable dependable check; I am looking at an annual award of almost $12,000. That is something to think about, is it not?”
