The incident occurred early Friday morning at Mickey’s Convenience Store in Killeen, TX, located at the 4500 block of East Veteran’s Memorial Boulevard. According to police, the tanker truck had been in the middle of a routine job, refueling the gas pumps shortly before 4:30 am when a motorist driving an SUV crashed into it. The collision caused an immediate explosion that led to a fire and engulfed both vehicles. The fire then spread to the store and at least six other vehicles parked in the parking lot were caught in the flames as well. The tanker truck driver was fortunate to survive the incident unharmed with the help of Good Samaritans who quickly pulled him out of the cab. However, the SUV driver was pronounced dead at the scene just after 9:35 am. An autopsy has been ordered and the victim’s name has not been released until the family is notified.

A Killeen fire truck had been en route to a nearby trailer fire and happened to pass by the convenience store at the onset of the inferno. Firefighters saw the people pulling the truck driver out of the gas tanker and immediately stopped to help. However, gasoline from the tanker flowed had flowed onto the pavement and caused the fire truck to go up in flames, completely destroying it. Fortunately no firefighters were injured and they requested aid from Fort Hood Fire to help contain the flames. They also called Killeen’s HAZMAT to the scene after firefighters discovered gasoline from the parking lot was running into a small creek that spills into Nolan Creek downstream. The situation was enough for officials to force the evacuations of 55 residents on South 56th and 58th Streets, Water Street and on Twin Creeks Drive at the Twin Creeks Apartments. The evacuated residents were offered shelter at the Killeen Special Events Center and then later were moved to the community center.

By Friday afternoon, residents of 56th Street were allowed to return home, but the homes on 58th Street remained off limits. A number of nearby businesses were forced to close as well. The fire also caused a number of power outages in the surrounding area.

. I got to speak this the person that crashed into this tanker truck driver was tailgating and speeding I have no sympathy for this person I'm sorry for the family but the driver he got what was coming to him or her if they were texting or driving too close to the track tanker I've watched too many of you people out there in cars race up on the rear end of a tanker and tailgating you do not have a clue that was getting ready to happen I watch people in cars pull right in front of a tanker and not take her ain't got time to stop you people are a bunch of dumbasses for taking on the 47 Vehicles you don't deserve to have any pity wake up get some common sense stay far away from these big trucks they're deadly and they will win in the end victims. The only victims are the passengers in the car

Thank God the tanker driver is ok and sorry he has to deal with this while doing his job. And me being a compassionate human being with a CDL also feel bad for the passed person's family.

Carl Engblom Jr........What does you being a driver/trainer have to do with anything? Heck as a trainer in todays trucking world, you would only need 3 months experience ..........in16 days you can become the next ROADMASTER........LMAO
Larry Peterson
Should be embarrassing to admit he is a trainer. Seeing the lack of training in alot of newbies

Those drivers who choose to haul fuel have my utmost respect and deserve to be treated with the highest respect for the dangerous work they perform everyday for all of us!!!

This is one main reason we don't need refugees from other Islamic countries. Heaven forbid if they wanted to that's all it would take to bring the county to it's knees.

Sadly, most car/truck accidents are caused by cars. Pay attention. It's not a toy.

Although I'm sorry for their loss, someone will make it the tankers fault

Shelby BigDawg Amie
Who said he wasn't done? or he might not have started yet...The article doesn't give details on that part, just because he was there don't automatically mean he was pumping fuel at the time of the accident

Down the street from my house, the gas station looks like someone dropped about a 4 pound package of C4 in it

This almost happened to me when I delivered fuel. A woman ran over the safety cone and then the fuel line which broke the head off resulting in fuel spraying up into the engine compartment. I was able to shut the valves off, but it was definitely a miracle that several people were not killed. Yes, she was on her cell phone!

Jeez , what a disaster
