by Jana Ritter - Published: 1/04/2017Today the trial for begins for a California truck driver who went on a driving rampage last May in Berrien County, Michigan. The incident occurred on the morning of May 26, 2016, and began in Indiana where Jiles was spotted driving his semi-truck recklessly along the highway swerving in and out of traffic. When he crossed into Michigan, the Michigan State Police picked up the chase and the pursuit continued for several miles as Jiles hit several cars and constructions cones, ran motorists off the road, and nearly ran over Police Chief Shawn Martin of Baroda-Lake Township. During a preliminary hearing last summer, officers from Berrien County Sheriff’s deputies and Baroda-Lake Township gave their testimony of what occurred when they took over the pursuit. One sheriff’s deputy said that as he passed the semi to try to get other cars out of its path, Jiles swerved at him and then came fast from behind, nearly slamming into him. Chief Martin also testified that he had nearly been killed while on the job that day when he was outside of his patrol vehicle placing stop sticks on the highway, in an attempt to end the chase. He said that he saw the semi-truck barreling towards him and that he thought was going to die. Martin said he had no choice but to dive over a cable barrier into the ditch, which caused him to injure his shoulder but ultimately saved his own life.
The chase finally ended after a Commercial Vehicle Enforcement officer shot the truck’s left side drive wheel, causing the tire to shred and the semi to jackknife off the road near Exit 22 on I-94. According to police, they approached him with a police dog and Jiles allegedly assaulted the K-9 officer and then punched the dog several times in the head. Police also said they were forced to subdue him using a Taser and allege that Jiles was under the influence of drugs during the chase. He was found with cocaine, meth, and a firearm in his possession. Jiles is facing several charges that include; assault with intent to murder, possession of a firearm by a felon, carrying a concealed weapon, assaulting/resisting and assaulting police, injuring and harassing a police dog, weapons felony firearms, possession of cocaine, possession of methamphetamine, assault with a dangerous weapon, possession of marijuana, third-degree fleeing police, reckless driving causing serious bodily impairment, second-degree fleeing police and operating while intoxicated causing serious injury.
Interestingly, the juror questioning on Tuesday largely centered around their knowledge of drug abuse and whether they believe someone who commits an alleged crime while drunk or high should still be held accountable for their actions. The trial is taking place in Berrien County in Judge Scott Schofield’s courtroom and is expected to continue through Friday.
I think if you willingly take drugs and commit a crime you should be held responsible.
Yes he should be held accountable for his actions... He was already a felon!!!
Just look at all those made up changes. There are enough charges that no lawyer could ever hope to get a not guilt verdict, so it's just a case where if they throw enough paper the DA has has to get a conviction on something.
Made up charges? Where did you get your law degree?
Just watch the trial and watch how many of those charges disappear. The ones that disappear were the made up charges. After you watch the trial come on back and tell me which charges were made up?
Got to love truck stop lawyers.
Ok, I'm not a lawyer. But read the article, why did the police chief fear for his life? He should have known that the truck would come at him, isn't it his job to know these things? So have fun watching this go to trial. See all but the most prove able charges disappear. Then tell me how some of those charges aren't made up. As far as that goes, try taking a brand new truck in for an inspection and pissing the inspector off. He will indeed find shit wrong on that brand new truck. So now tell me how wrong I am?
Victor the police have the initial charges, but the prosecutor sets the final charges. Charges are sometimes added or dropped by the DA's office.

If you get high and then do something you are responsible ! Driving stealing what ever ! No one forced it down your throats but yourself !
Nobody with that kind of problem should be able to get behind the wheel of a rig. As to whether or not he should be held accountable? Absolutely. You don't mess with that kind of stuff when your profession requires a clear head.
Absolutely they should be held accountable. They put drugs or alcohol in their system knowing full well what could happen!
Your body is your vessel. You need to be accountable for the actions you choose with it. Should we be excused from vehicular homicides because the vehicle was the cause of death other than the driver?
If you choose to use drugs or alcohol and commit a crime then it's your bad. The victims sure didn't get a choice now did they?
Drunk, high, sober, black, white, brown, blue, green, rich or poor commit a crime you should be prosecuted equally under the law...unfortunately justice is not blind nor equal...
It's people like this that set bad examples for us good drivers!!! The next time I'm stopped in Michigan the police will assume I'm just like this drug head !!! SAD !!!!!!
It's called consequences. ..to every action their is a reaction so if you screw up because of your own stupidity their are still consequences. ....
Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is a CRIME. Been one for a while...WTF......
Stupid question! Yes he needs to be held accountable for his actions! Under the influence, firearm and drugs in his possession, already having a record, do the math! The answers are right there!
Well how about our leaders in the Whitehouse that say they are in legislation and they get excused when they drive down the interstate the wrong way and kill a family
YesereeBob Definitely long overdue no one held a gun to his head and forced him to dodrugs, he deserves the max penalty if injury or death resulted, stop mollycoddeled felons .
He must be responsible for his actions and held accountable.... Yes !!
If you willing take the drug of your own choice, anything you do because of it is your responsibility
Yes,and so should anyone that causes an accident while texting on their phone.
There should be no excuse for druggies or drunks to use that will take the blame off of them for their stupidity.
We all know the repercussions of doing Drugs or Driving under any kind of Influence!
Yes! We already give criminals a pass for their religion and culture, their poverty and victimhood.
