Earlier this month, Tennessee-based transportation company Averitt Express announced a new on-the-job-training diesel mechanic program for U.S. veterans and family members with Post 9/11 GI Bill Benefits.

Averitt reports that the company created the on-the-job training (OJT) program in order to support military veterans in their transition to careers in the civilian realm, as well to fulfill the company’s commitment to hiring 1,200 additional veterans by 2020.

“At Averitt Express, we believe that every veteran deserves to work in a supportive environment with a company focused on his or her success,” said Laura Wettack, personnel manager for Averitt. “We’re proud to honor veterans and their families by helping them embark on fulfilling second careers. We are always looking for ways we can bring veterans into the Averitt family and our GI Bill OJT diesel mechanic program does exactly that.”

According to Averitt, individuals who are selected for the OJT program will be trained by shop leaders at Averitt on duties such as computer skills to assisting with repairs on tractors and trailers.

Averitt reports that the program for veterans offers paid hours, raises based on a trainee’s experience level and the option for a 4-day work week.

Applicants for the program will reportedly receive 12 months of on-the-job training and will see eligibility to earn up to $1,140 monthly tax free through the GI Bill on top of Averitt company pay.

Sources at Averitt report that benefit checks are paid to eligible trainees directly from the Department of Veteran Affairs shortly after training begins, and Averitt pay for the program starts at $10.75 per hour with the ability to see up to $21.50 per hour after the 12th month of training.

Veterans at Averitt enrolled in the program will also see company benefits including options for medical coverage, insurance options, paid holidays and paid time off, and profit sharing, among other benefits.
