Earlier this week, Fort Smith, Arkansas-based carrier ArcBest announced that ABF Freight, the company’s less-than-truckload carrier was the recipient of a Pro Patria Award recognizing the company’s support of its employees who serve in the National Guard and Reserve.

According to ABF Freight, the company received the Pro Patria Award in addition to the Above and Beyond Award, both awarded by the Arkansas Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), a program from the Department of Defense.

ABF President Tim Thorne reports that the company has long supported veterans and that ABF Freight receives this honor with distinction for their efforts in supporting U.S. Veterans.

“These awards truly reflect ABF Freight’s commitment to our employees who serve in the U.S. military,” said Thorne. “As a veteran, I am so proud to work for a company that supports our nation’s heroes. We have a long history of supporting those who serve, and I thank the ESGR for recognizing our efforts.”

ABF Freight reports that the ESGR committee of each state presents a Pro Patria Award annually to one large, one small and one public-sector employer in each state.

Additionally, the Above and Beyond Award recognizes an employer who has demonstrated an effort above and beyond the requirements of the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Acts in providing employees in the Guard and Reserve with additional non-mandated benefits.

“The Pro Patria Award is the highest-level award that may be bestowed by a state ESGR committee,” said Northwest Arkansas Area chairperson for ESGR, Jon Woodham. “Recipients have demonstrated the greatest support to Guard and Reserve employees through their leadership and practices, including adopting personnel policies that make it easier for employees to participate in the National Guard and Reserves.”

ABF reports that in other efforts to provide career opportunities for U.S. Veterans, ABF Freight has seen a partnership with the U.S. Army and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters Military Assistance Program since January 2015, a program that assists soldiers in the transition from military service to careers as professional truck drivers.
