The tragic accident happened at mile marker 129 on eastbound I-80 at about 6:10 am Tuesday morning. Sami S. Guzick, 50, of Joliet, was on a delivery job when the double trailer FedEx truck she was driving became disabled. She pulled to the shoulder of the road and called in for assistance. A second FedEx driver (a 49-year-old male from La Grange) was called to the scene to assist Guzick and he parked his semi behind her on the right shoulder.

According to police, Guzick got out of her truck to approach the second driver when a third semi-truck (belonging to West Side Transport of Cedar Rapids, Iowa) suddenly came along and veered onto the shoulder. The West Side truck then crashed into the rear of the first FedEx truck, then the second and then struck down Guzick before it exploded into flames. A passing motorist witnessed the horrific crash unfold and said it looked like a “bad dream.” Then he saw a truck driver on fire and immediately jumped into action.

"There's a dude on fire, man, I gotta get out and help," Beau Loomis recalls thinking at the time. He also happened to have a fire blanket in his vehicle. "I ran and there was a couple of guys standing there, and I threw the fire blanket at all of them. Tried to throw it on the guy. The guy was on the blanket and he was just mumbling. I don't think he knew anything, like, what was going on," Loomis says.

Emergency responders soon arrived at the crash site and sadly, Guzick was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:55 am. The two other drivers survived the crash but were transported to hospital with serious injuries. It was later confirmed that the West Side Transport driver (a 46-year-old male from Chicago) suffered severe burns from the flames and was transported to Loyola University Medical Center.

The eastbound lanes of the interstate were shut down for more than 10 hours while police investigated the crash and road crews cleared the wreckage. While investigators have not yet determined who is at fault for the fatal crash, FedEx has released the following statement:

"First and foremost we extend our deepest thoughts and concerns to the family and friends of those involved in this tragic incident. We are cooperating fully with investigating authorities at this time."

R.I.P. lady driver. As a driver myself, I thank God every night I get parked safely without injury to myself, or others. Driving a truck is a huge responsibility. It only takes a split second to forget that fact and let your guard down when an incident is likely to occur. God bless all those drivers out here, most of us are a long way from home. Be safe.

Don't know what caused it...it clearly states in here that the weatside driver veered off onto the shoulder...thats what happens when u text and drive...i feel sorry for the other 2 and the family that lost a loved 1...the driver of the westside truck should get life without parole when he gets out of the hospital...i have no sympathy for that driver at all...im a driver myself so i know how things go on the open road...like i said i feel sorry for the family that lost a loved 1 and for the lady driver that is seriously injured...my heart goes out to her and the family of the lost 1...as far as the driver of the westside ur a piece of sh!t and u should go to prison

Keep your un-informed opinions and name calling to your self unless you completely know all the facts. You dont even know if that driver owns a cell phone? As a 'professional' driver you should know better than to speak so critical of others unless you personally witnessed all the events.

You shouldn't judge because you have no idea what happened! You are assuming and that is wrong! If he was on the phone they will find out. I think when you are driving you should be looking ahead of you to see what is going on and you should always move over for vehicles on the shoulder! If you are paying attention you should see them way before you reach them!

I can't answer that. I think it would be a real possibility. The reference was to a point that we do not know the cause because we were not there. A full analysis will determine as much as it can, and maybe we will find out he was "texting" and if so hopefully the allowable punishment will be applied.

Someday the right person is going to get killed by a trucker on Meth and something will be done... I mean, damn, 6:00 o'clock in the morning, had to have been up all night, and probably several days before that... U know the law doesn't even test truckers unless someone is killed. I would like to know the rest of this story? And, things get pushed back and hidden most of the times anyway. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Most Truck Drivers are very responsible and dedicated to their profession. More likely than not a "Rubber Necker" got infront of the truck and slowed down without leaving room enough for the truck to slow down. The Driver could have been trying everything in their power not to kill the said "Rubber Necker" and didn't have time to react to the other circumstances... These NEW FCC rules and regulations put drivers on the road during the roughest times to travel for big rigs. Think about it..... Back when Drivers coulld drive 8 hours and take 8 off there were fewer trucking accidents or fatalities. Personally I think these REGULATIONS are destroying the driving profession. Drivers are people not machines. ; Anti lock Brakes also add to the inability to stop a rig as fast and important factors are lost due to the lack of Skid marks and ability to drag the weight of the load to provide more precisive braking ability. "Jake Brakes" Helped to slow trucks. Not they have been reduced to more or less just noise makers..... People in Cars need better training and need to know how far ahead of a SEMI they have to be before pulling infront of them and braking..... I know for a Fact that most people in cars have no clue how far it takes for a truck to come to a stop or slow down from traveling at Highway speeds. I Hope more people who Drive read this and the idiotic people making more regulations against Truck Drivers read this and WAKE UP !!!! Drivers' Lives Matter !
