This past weekend saw the industry recognize some of the unsung heroes of the world of trucking in the 13th annual National Technician Skills Competitions in Orlando, Florida as events kicked off this past Saturday.

The American Trucking Associations-sponsored event reportedly saw some of the top technicians in the trucking industry display their skills over the weekend in an event that demonstrated the sector of the industry related to maintenance and safety.

According to Technology and Maintenance Council Executive Director Robert Braswell, the events at this year’s National Technician Skills Competition highlight changes and adaptation within the trucking industry as well as the more familiar hallmarks of truck technician skills.

"We see those skills growing each year, just like this event, which this year includes for the first time cybersecurity and trailer telematics challenges for our contestants," said Braswell. "TMC, just like our professional and student competitions, grows to respond to the changing demands of the trucking industry."

According to the American Trucking Associations (ATA), the competitions began this past weekend featuring written exams and qualifying rounds for traditional and trailer technicians, while TMCFutureTech National Student Skills Competition taking place today.

The ATA reports that the championships this year will also feature a charity-related aspect, with collected funds benefiting those impacted by Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma.

ATA President and CEO Chris Spear reports that those involved in organizing the event are invested in the well-being of those affected by the recent hurricanes, noting that the trucking industry has particular importance in relief aid to impacted areas.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those families, friends and colleagues that have been affected by Hurricane Irma," said Spear. "The trucking industry lives in, and delivers to, every community across America, including those communities impacted this weekend. Trucking is one of the first responders to natural disasters and we will continue to not only help in the Hurricane relief efforts, but we will also help rebuild all communities.”

According to event organizers, winners from both events will be recognized on Tuesday, September 19 at an awards banquet.
